Since Atlanta’s origin as a
railroad terminal, our region’s growth has been spurred
by its transportation system. Trains, airplanes and
highways for automobiles made Atlanta one of the most
dynamic cities in the U.S. through the last half of the
20th Century.
Now, as we enter the 21st Century, we face new
transportation challenges.
Traffic is stealing time from our
families, poor air quality threatens our health, and our
future economic growth is jeopardized.
That’s why the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority is working to create a seamless, multi-modal regional transportation system that relieves congestion and improves air quality. GRTA was a vital partner in the IT3 (Investing in Tomorrow’s Transportation Today) effort and is working closely with the Georgia Department of Transportation and others to select and implement transportation and transit projects that will create more reliable trip times and increase access to employees and jobs throughout the state.
There already are many options for
getting around Atlanta. Links on this page will help you
avoid traffic jams if you are driving … find the closest

Transit
Service Contacts in the Atlanta Region
There are a number of public and private transit providers in the Atlanta region, most of which are county-based. Contact the transit system serving your trip originating point and see if a transfer will be needed to complete your trip. If you will need a transfer, be sure to obtain it when you board the bus. Transfers are loaded on Breeze Cards when you tap out of the MARTA rail station or when you tap on to a MARTA or CCT bus.
Other transportation alternatives include taxicabs, van pools and paratransit service.
The Transportation Planning Board (TPB) - now the Regional Transit Committee of the Atlanta Regional Commission - has provided Transit Maps for the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. These maps are in PDF format and will open in a new window. Please note that these maps are several years old and now only provide a general overview of transit services available in metropolitan Atlanta.
