Welcome
to the Atlanta Heavy-Duty Vehicle and Equipment Inventory and
Emissions Study homepage! The purpose of this study is to
provide state and local policymakers with an accurate assessment
of the air pollution emissions generated by heavy-duty vehicles
and equipment operating in the Atlanta area, and to recommend
cost-effective ways to reduce those emissions. Heavy-duty
vehicles and equipment include trucks and buses, as well as,
non-road equipment such as bulldozers and locomotives.
Heavy-duty vehicles and equipment contribute to the summertime
smog problem in Atlanta.
Partnering
together, the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority, the
Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection
Division, and the Georgia Department of Transportation have
commissioned the Georgia Institute of Technology and Environ
Corporation to conduct this study. Georgia Tech and
Environ are collecting a detailed inventory of the heavy-duty
vehicles and equipment operating in the 21-county Atlanta area,
which they will use to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of
potential strategies to reduce heavy-duty emissions.
Examples of potential strategies include retrofitting older
heavy-duty diesel equipment with oxidation catalysts and using
ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel. The Atlanta Regional
Commission and the State Road and Tollway Authority of Georgia
are providing additional technical guidance to the study.
