Welcome to the NWCS website.

The Northwest Connectivity Study (NWCS) has identified a Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA), which was selected by resolution of the GRTA Board on February 11th, 2004 and by the Atlanta Regional Commission on March 24, 2004.  The two year process included 16 public meetings with 678 participants and an additional 49 other stakeholder meetings.

The NWCS examined what might be done to improve transportation connections among activity centers within the I75/US41/CSX Railroad corridor, including Midtown Atlanta on the south, through the Cumberland Galleria area and up to Town Center on the north.  First all possible alternatives were identified and narrowed to eleven for analysis (ten build and one no-build).  The best portions of the ten build alternatives were combined into three alternatives and Alternative A was selected as the LPA (see adjacent box: Final Three Build- Alternative Maps).

The next step was to initiate a joint I-75 High-Occupancy Lane (HOV) and Transit Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in partnership with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). GRTA initiated the contract with GDOT for the two year effort in May 2004. Public meetings were held in July 2004 and the scone scoping meetings will be held in November 2004. Following that meeting, GRTA will initiate the Station Area Planning Process, which will include a series of public meetings. Successful completion of the EIS would lead to a design phase in 2006 with possible construction in 2007 or 2008. This project is titled "I-75 Northwest Transit Corridor" in ARC's proposed Regional Transportation Plan.

GRTA will also be advancing additional analysis of NWCS Phase II to develop implement able projects for key arterial highways in the Study Area.  Efforts with planning partners will focus on Marietta Boulevard: Atlanta-Bolton; Atlanta Road: Bolton-Cumberland; South Cobb Parkway: Cumberland-Marietta; and Northside Drive: I-75-Atlantic Station.  This nine-month effort will result in a report to GRTA's board in November 2004.
