Regional Vanpool

The mission of GRTA's vanpool program is to provide the public with an accessible and affordable commute option by coordinating a regional vanpool program that enables ride-alone commuters to rideshare, thereby decreasing traffic congestion and improving air quality.

Vanpools are one of the most cost-effective modes of public transportation in the United States. A vanpool consists of a group of passengers who share a 7 to 15 passenger van to commute to work. The vanpool driver is a participant who has undergone a background check and agreed to the additional responsibilities. Sharing a commute through a vanpool reduces parking, fuel and vehicle operating costs and allows access to HOV lanes.

In the GRTA program the vehicles are provided by two vanpool service operators, Enterprise Leasing and VPSI, Inc., who also provide maintenance and insurance on the vehicles, and who set and collect the fees from the riders. Vanpool users enjoy many benefits, including:

    -Departures at times convenient for the vanpool group members
    -Reliable trip times due to free access to HOT and HOV lanes
    -Guaranteed Ride Home program provides a reliable trip home when unplanned events occur.
    -Tax benefits, both for the vanpool rider and their employers
    -Savings on gas, maintenance, wear and tear, and possibly even lower insurance rates on personal vehicles
    -Employers often provide reduced cost or preferential parking for the vans

GRTA works closely with local stakeholders to continually improve features of the program including The Clean Air Campaign and the Atlanta Regional Commission.

Vanpool Operators

Vendors who participate in the Regional Vanpool program are selected each year in an open bidding process initiated by the issuance of a Vanpool Services RFP. Information about current Vanpool RFPs is available in the Open Solicitations section of this website.
