Frequently Asked Questions about Xpress Fares:
Q.
Is a 20-ride pass good for 20 round trip or 20 one-way
trips? How long is it good for?
A.
A 20-ride pass is good for 20 one-way trips. The pass
has no time limit. It expires when the 20th trip is taken.
Q.
Is there a difference between the 20-ride pass and the 40-Ride
pass?
A.
Only in cost, both
are good for one-way trips and expire when all trips have
been used; those who choose to purchase the 40-Ride pass will
save $5 over the cost of purchasing two 20-Ride passes
separately. Q.
How does the 31-day pass work? Is it good for just one
month?
What day can I start using the pass?
A.
The 31 day pass is good for unlimited rides for 31
consecutive calendar days. The first time the
pass is used, the driver or the fare box will record the
expiration date of the pass on the back of the pass.
You may start using the pass on any day.
The 31 calendar day time period does not begin until the first
time the pass is used.
Q.
How do I transfer to MARTA? Is it free?
A.
When you board the Xpress
coach ask your driver for a MARTA transfer. When the coach
reaches the MARTA Five Points station, exit the coach and use
the transfer to go through the MARTA fare gates.
Q.
I bought a round-trip ticket, but when I tried to use
it to get on MARTA in the afternoon, MARTA would not honor the
ticket and made me pay $1.75. Why isn't the round-trip ticket
good for my whole trip?
A.
Xpress round-trip tickets are good
only on Xpress routes. If you transfer to
MARTA, you must pay MARTA for your return trip, and may then
use a MARTA transfer to board Xpress. A one-way Xpress ticket and MARTA transfer at
$3 and a one-way MARTA ticket and transfer at $1.75 is less
expensive at $4.75 than a $5 Xpress round trip ticket.
If you use both Xpress and MARTA to complete your
trip you may also want to consider
purchasing a 20-Ride Xpress
pass for $45 and a 20-token packet $30 from MARTA for a total of
$75. This will save you $20 over the regular fares (20 x $3 =
$60 + 20 x 1.75 = $35 or $95 total).
In metropolitan Atlanta, the basic rule
for public transit is "pay the system you first board" and
then transfer at no charge to another system. This ensures
that each transit system receives at least one full fare from
each rider who completes a round-trip journey using more than
one public transit system. Agreements are in place between Xpress and MARTA to insure that if
one system transfers significantly more riders to the other
that
appropriate compensation is made for the extra burden.
In practice, the number of people
transferring between the systems is almost equal.
Q.
What is a reverse commute? When can I get the
half-price fare? Why is the fare
lower?
A.
A reverse commute is a trip taken in the opposite
direction that most people are traveling. For example, if you
board Xpress Route 440 at Five
Points at 7:01 a.m. and travel to the Clayton County Justice
Center, you are making a reverse commute. Reverse commute
fares are generally available between 5:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.
on trips leaving downtown Atlanta and from 3:00 p.m. until
6:30 p.m. on trips into downtown Atlanta. Off-peak trips,
between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and after 6:30 p.m., are also
eligible for the ½ price fare.
Since fewer people travel in the reverse
commute direction and at off-peak times, the half-price fare
is used to attract more riders to Xpress service.
Q.
Can I use my Xpress pass on
MARTA/C-TRAN/CCT/GTC? Can I use my MARTA/CCT/C-TRAN/GCT pass
on Xpress?
A.
No, an Xpress pass is not good for
starting a ride on MARTA, C-TRAN, CCT or GTC. Free transfers
from Xpress to MARTA are available when you first board the
coach. Ask the operator when you pay your fare.
A MARTA pass will be accepted as a
transfer to outbound from Atlanta Xpress routes at the McGill
and West Peachtree, Peachtree Center, and Pryor and Alabama
(Five Points) stops. A MARTA pass is not good for starting an
inbound to Atlanta trip on Xpress. Currently, there are no
transfer points between Xpress and C-TRAN, CCT, or
GCT. The current agreement among public
transit providers in metropolitan Atlanta calls for riders to
pay the fare of the first system they board. They may then
transfer to or from MARTA for free. This system allows riders
to reach their destinations easily, and also makes sure that
each system is able to collect a fare when a round-trip is
made. (A payment is typically made if significantly more
people transfer to or from MARTA than transfer to or from
one of the other systems. Experience in the region shows that the
number of transfers between MARTA and the other systems is
roughly equal.)
Q.
How can my company/office/church/ group make a bulk
purchase of Xpress
tickets?
A.
Xpress is happy to make arrangements for bulk
ticket purchases. Please call GRTA at
404-463-3000 to discuss your organization's
needs. |
